What is a giclée and how do you pronounce it?

A giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a type of art reproduction using highly advanced inkjet technology specially designed for this purpose.  The word itself is French for "spray".  In the art industry, giclées have dominantly overtaken traditional art reproduction methods, such as lithography, for some very good reasons that benefit the collector, such as:

  • Giclées have a superior color range - meaning they are more vivid and colorful than other methods, which also means they are more accurate reproductions of the original painting.
  • Giclées are archival quality - they use special inks, coatings, and substrates to ensure your prints retain their beautiful color for many decades.
  • By allowing publishers to produce only the amount of prints they need (rather than the hundreds or thousands necessary with lithography), giclée technology has reduced the cost of marketing high quality art reproduction, thereby making fine art collecting possible for a far wider range of people.
