What do SN and AP mean? | What do SN and AP mean? |
|
Simon Bull currently offers two edition levels: SN and AP. SN stands for "Standard Numbered" and AP stands for "Artist Proof". The artist proof comes from the days of traditional art
reproduction in which the first 20 or so prints that rolled off the
press were the best, with the remainder of the run subtly but steadily
declining in quality. The first prints would be reserved for the artist's use, thus the term "artist proof."
With today's giclée technology, however, the thousandth print is of the exact same high quality as the first, so the artist proof is more of a traditional designation and not an indicator of the quality of the print. In our Masterworks Portfolio, both APs and SNs are hand-embellished with acrylic paint to make them nearly indistinguishable from the original work. In the Studio Line, only the APs are embellished with acrylic paint. In addition, the APs of both lines are released in a much smaller edition size (about 1/10 that of SNs) which gives them greater perceived value in the eyes of many collectors.
